Evolution

[edit]

Marvel Entertainment’due south Creative Consultant Joe Quesada said in September 2016 that there were plans to explore the character of Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in other media post-obit her unusually rapid success and popularity amidst comic volume readers.[31]
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in May 2018 that a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project based on Kamala Khan was “in the works”,[32]
[33]
and would follow the release of the film
Captain Marvel
(2019) as Khan is inspired by that moving-picture show’south title character Carol Danvers.[32]

Past August 2019, Marvel Studios had begun development on a
Ms. Marvel
television serial for the streaming service Disney+, with Bisha Thou. Ali hired to serve as the head author after working equally a author on the serial
Loki.[34]
[35]
Ali approached Kevin Wright, one of the Curiosity Studios executives on
Loki, while they were working together to get an opportunity to run into about
Ms. Marvel,[35]
and declined an extension to continue working on
Loki
in social club to create her pitch. She believed Marvel responded to her “full general vibe and energy” from her pitch, and that a serial about Ms. Marvel was very personal to her “as a fan, as a South Asian person, as a Pakistani woman, [and] equally a adult female from a Muslim background”, making a show near these be “specific
and
universal”.[36]
Ms. Marvel
was officially appear at the 2019 D23 conference.[37]

In September 2020, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (credited as Adil & Bilall[28]) were hired to direct ii episodes of the series, with Meera Menon hired to straight one episode, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy hired to straight 3 episodes;[38]
[39]
Menon and Obaid-Chinoy ultimately directed ii episodes each.[28]
Despite their different visual styles and prior work, all of the directors worked closely together to create a “seamless transition” between their episodes.[x]

: 5

Ali, El Arbi, and Fallah serve every bit executive producers on the serial and worked closely with Marvel Studios to develop it,[forty]
[41]
with Kamala Khan co-creator Sana Amanat also serving equally an executive producer.[41]
[28]
Curiosity Studios’ Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Brad Winderbaum also serve as executive producers.[28]

Writing

[edit]

In addition to Ali, writers for the series include Kate Gritmon, Freddy Syborn, A. C. Bradley, Matthew Chauncey, Sabir Pirzada, Fatimah Asghar, and Will Dunn.[29]
Bradley and Chauncey were respectively the caput author, and story editor and writer for
What If…?,[42]
[43]
with Bradley also serving as a consulting producer on
Ms. Marvel,[43]

: 6

while Pirzada was a writer for
Moon Knight.[44]
Ali believed having Amanat every bit an executive producer on the series allowed them to “stay true to the character” from the comic books, while adding “something new, with a freshness, vitality and gimmicky edge”.[45]
Ali called her time working on
Loki
every bit “proficient training ground” to serve every bit
Ms. Marvel
s head writer,[35]
learning what creative freedoms Marvel Studios allowed for each series to inhabit their own role of the MCU, while still existence divisional by the overarching storytelling.[35]
[36]
She was told to go along Khan’s story “footing level”, which was already part of her plan for the serial, while e’er focusing on who the character of Khan represents. Ali also received communication from
WandaVision
and
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
head writers Jac Schaeffer and Malcolm Spellman.[36]

In
Ms. Marvel, Khan gains the ability to harness cosmic energy and create hard calorie-free constructs from a magical bangle,[3]
[4]
which differs from the shapeshifting abilities that she has in the comics. Feige explained that the Inhuman source of her abilities in the comics did not “match” with the timeline and events of the MCU, so her powers were adapted to be related to her Pakistani heritage. They were also brought closer to the cosmic powers of the other heroes in the film
The Marvels
(2023), in which Vellani co-stars. Feige added that the character’s “giant hands and artillery” would still appear in the series “in spirit”.[46]
The modify in Khan’s powers was not role of Ali’south initial pitch, with Ali adding it was a “group” decision to alter them and echoed Feige in saying the change was done to align the character with what has been established in the MCU.[45]
She added that it was important that the new portrayal of Khan’s powers had the “same connectivity with her psychology and the journey she’s going through and the way she sees herself” as her shapeshifting abilities did in the comics.[vii]
Amanat and another of the grapheme’southward co-creators, G. Willow Wilson, both were consulted on and supported the alter, with Amanat feeling that it was “fun to give Kamala dissimilar kinds of powers that feel big in telescopic and cinematic… the essence of what the powers are in the comics is there, both from a metaphorical standpoint and from a visual standpoint.”[33]
Khan is also revealed to be a
Djinn
in the serial, which some Muslim fans pointed out the Quran prohibits the worshipping of
Djinn. Obaid-Chinoy responded that she believed
Djinn
“is a word that’due south loosely thrown around in South Asia” and the series was trying to showcase that “anyone who is dissimilar, or anyone who has powers that come from unexplained sources could be mistaken for origins”.[47]

Ms. Marvel
is a coming-of-historic period story, with Amanat noting the series took inspiration from the character’south comics, creating the MCU version of the comics’ “quirkiness and stylistic distinction” and beingness “told through the lens of Kamala’southward experience and her wild imagination”. She also described Khan’s life and world every bit “naturally colorful” given Jersey Urban center is “a pretty crazy and vibrant and multicultural place”. Ballad Danvers is Khan’southward inspiration to go a hero, having seen her almost defeat Thanos during the events of
Avengers: Endgame
(2019). Amanat believed it was important to tell a story about who your heroes are for a immature person of colour, and exploring what that does “to your sense of self”.[33]
Ali wanted to mix the “whimsical and magical” qualities from Ms. Curiosity’s comics with American loftier school films, being inspired by John Hughes’southward films and the films
10 Things I Hate Most You
(1999),
Lady Bird
(2017),
Eighth Course
(2018), and
Booksmart
(2019),[v]
likewise as the MCU film
Spider-Man: Homecoming
(2017). Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan also was an inspiration for the series.[35]
The series features a love triangle between Khan, Bruno Carrelli, and Kamran, which was substantially toned downwardly during the writing procedure because Ali did not want audiences to believe information technology was the dominant storyline. El Arbi called Bruno being trapped in the friend zone “relatable”, while Ali felt this was a “fundamental part of growing upwardly”.[nine]

Design

[edit]

Arjun Bhasin serves as the costume designer for the series.[45]
Khan’s costume was inspired by burkinis and shalwar kameez, with subtle “cultural details” in the fabric.[62]

: 89

Amanat credited Bhasin for incorporating “cool textures” to make the costume feel South Asian in “a very subtle fashion”, and noted the lightning bolt on the costume was updated from the comic version of the costume.[45]
Christopher Glass serves every bit production designer,[63]
while Natasha Gerasimova was the product designer for the series’due south reshoots.[64]

Filming

[edit]

El Arbi and Fallah, Menon, and Obaid-Chinoy, directed the series.[38]

[66]
with additional filming at Blackhall Studios and Areu Brothers Studios.[67]
The series was filmed under the working title
Bailiwick of jersey.[68]
Robrecht Heyvaert served as the cinematographer for El Arbi and Fallah,[69]
with Carmen Cabana cinematographer for Menon,[lxx]
and Jules O’Loughlin serving equally cinematographer for Obaid-Chinoy.[71]

The blithe sequences were not scripted,[69]
though an early on version of the script for the first episode had a moment within Khan’s caput, which the directors took and expanded that idea across the entire serial.[vii]
El Arbi and Fallah conceived them every bit a way “to become inside Kamala Khan’due south head and capture her dream world and fantasy world”,[69]
and for viewers to see the world “through her optics”.[62]

: 88

These moments were a style to interpret the vibrancy the directors enjoyed from the comics into the series, and were inspired by the blithe movie
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
(2018).[72]
The integration of the blithe elements took a lot of planning during pre-production, and did not permit the directors any ability to improvise how those sequences were shot.[72]
El Arbi noted the other directors besides enjoyed using them for their episodes.[69]
The duo were also inspired past Spike Lee and making New Jersey a character in the serial like Lee does with New York Urban center in his films,[72]
Steven Spielberg, anime (particularly for the visual effects),[62]

Secondary filming occurred in Hudson County, New Jersey, from March to early Apr.[67]
[74]
Vellani and Shah continued to film scenes in Atlanta through late Apr and early May.[53]
[75]
Obaid-Chinoy began filming the 4th and fifth episodes in Thailand past March 23, specifically in Bangkok and at the Studio Park facilities.[76]
[77]
Given the series’ strict COVID-19 protocols,
Ms. Marvel
was able to obtain a waiver from the Thai regime to go on filming in the country throughout April and May 2021 despite new restrictions put in place in April that suspended other film and television set productions. The bandage and crew of 450 people were divided into three bubbles in lodge for production to proceed if a positive test was plant in 1 of the bubbles.[76]
Thailand stands in for Pakistan in the series, with the production unable to shoot in that country because of its political situation,[78]
though some pick up shots were filmed in Karachi.[71]
Filming for the serial ended in Thailand in early on May 2021.[76]

Reshoots, with Obaid-Chinoy directing, occurred at the end of January 2022.[79]
She stated the reshoots were mostly pickup cloth, meant to help clarify some story elements to make a cohesive narrative.[80]
Gerasimova conversely chosen the reshoots “pretty massive” given “quite a large script restructuring, and a lot of episodes were reshuffled”, which resulted in the need to build new sets in Atlanta, which is not e’er the case for reshoots. This included trying to match textile shot in Thailand which was “incredibly challenging”.[64]

Ms. Curiosity: Disquisitional reception past episode
  • Per centum of positive reviews tracked by the website Rotten Tomatoes[105]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 98% approval rating, with an boilerplate score of 8.95/10, based on 249 reviews. The website’s critics consensus reads, “Ms. Marvel
is a genuinely fresh addition to the MCU—both stylistically and substantively—with Iman Vellani ably powering proceedings with her super-sized charisma.”[105]
Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 78 out of 100 based on 23 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.[106]

The showtime ii episodes were given to critics to review the series ahead of its premiere,[107]
with Destiny Jackson at
Empire
feeling the series was able to balance the comedic and dramatic moments, with “witty visual gags and well-rounded, warmly funny, instantly likeable characters”, adding that
Ms. Marvel
had “an authentic have on Pakistani-American culture; […] the show takes admirable intendance in explaining the rituals and realities of life as a modern Muslim”.[108]
Writing for
Rolling Stone, Alan Sepinwall commented that the superhero scenes were “rarely more than functional” with a lack of free energy compared to the more than personal ones such every bit Kamala’due south “arguments with her parents, her and Nakia protesting the condition of the gender-segregated parts of the mosque, or her and… Kamran flirting while discussing their favorite Bollywood films”.[109]
Diversity
‘southward
Caroline Framke felt
Ms. Marvel
broke through “Marvel’s typical firm way” with the use of animation throughout to convey Khan’s thoughts and day dreams, calling it a “tangibly kinetic magic” and likening it to the animated film
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.[110]

Vellani’s portrayal of Kamala Khan received widespread praise.[111]
[112]
[107]
IGN
‘due south
Emma Fraser compared her to Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop in
Hawkeye,[111]
with Kathryn Porter of
Paste
adding that Vellani “shines” in the role and that there was “no manner to explain how keen she is in this other than to say that she embodies the true spirit of Kamala Khan”.[112]
Mohammad Zaheer at
BBC Culture
chosen Vellani “an adorable bundle of charisma” in a role “tailor-fabricated for her”, likening her to Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger from the Wizarding World franchise.[113]

The changes to Khan’south powers from the comics was also highlighted,[114]
[112]
[109]
[115]
with several critics commenting on the new origin’s more personal connection.[116]
[110]
[117]
In contrast, Sepinwall called these abilities “more generic” than the comics powers.[109]
Charles Pulliam-Moore at
The Verge
wrote that the live-action abilities “are only able to estimate the flashy aspects of what was originally a nuanced metaphor in the comics. […] But the prove doesn’t go nearly as far with its hero in terms of using its conceit to explore ideas like internalized racism or the pressures Western (read: white) beauty standards put on people of color”.[115]
G. Willow Wilson, one of the character’south creators, had previously described that during the development of Khan’s powers, it was chosen not to give her “sparkly, hand wave-y, floaty, pretty powers”, which Porter felt was “i of the near important things about her in the comics, and losing that in favor of powers that are, in fact, sparkly, mitt wave-y, floaty, and pretty is really unfortunate”.[112]

Activist Malala Yousafzai praised the series for its reflection of Pakistani people,[118]
and was “struck past how familiar Kamala Khan’s life seemed to me”, saying the series was “for every young person finding their place in the globe”.[119]
The serial was anticipated past Muslims in Jersey City, New Jersey, with councilman Yousef Saleh calling
Ms. Marvel
a “critical point in TV culture” since it would feature Muslims portrayed equally heroes rather than villains equally is more than commonly done, and he was excited almost the presence of a Muslim Marvel superhero to “inspire the next generation”. McNair Academic Loftier School in the city features a lodge called Coles Kamala Korps, which was launched in 2022 in response to anticipation for the series and
The Marvels, afterwards informally focusing on the character previously.[120]

Later on the release of the first episode, the series was review bombed on IMDb with a high amount of i star ratings. Multiple reviews were also posted with some reviewers expressing distaste for the family friendly aspects of the series or the change of Khan’southward powers, while others chosen the series “woke”, mentioning Captain Marvel.[121]
[122]

Future

[edit]

During the series’ official announcement at D23, Feige stated that after introducing Ms. Marvel in the series, the character would cross over to the MCU films,[37]
which he reiterated in November 2019.[123]
Previously,
Captain Marvel
star Brie Larson expressed interest in including Ms. Marvel in that motion picture’s sequel,[124]
and Vellani was confirmed to be appearing in the
Captain Marvel
sequel,
The Marvels, in December 2020.[125]
[126]
In Feb 2021, Feige revealed that
Ms. Marvel
would ready-up
The Marvels.[127]
The Marvels
was not fully conceived by the time Ali started working on the serial, and then she had a lot of artistic liberty in crafting the series, simply knew there needed to be a “maturity” beyond the arc of the series and so Khan would “exist set” for the events of
The Marvels.[7]
Additionally, Shaikh, Shroff, and Kapur reprise their respective roles every bit Khan’s family members in
The Marvels.[128]
